New Year's Eve 2010

It doesn't seem like 10 years have passed since the Y2K hysteria. Armageddon didn't happen then. I guess that I will wait until 2012 to see the world implode sometime during that year. Or not.

Our library has seen some fabulous changes this year. We have a new pay-per-use photocopier, which saves the staff about 400 cash transactions per week; we have moved our computer reservation station just a bit away from the staff desk, sort of forcing patrons to find their own answers; we are 97% with moving toward a self-checkout system; and we had an alarm system installed that is connected directly to the fire station. Wow. What a year.

On the down side--the alarm system has a grounding problem and every time we have rain or a thaw the alarm sounds at the alarm company and a staff member gets a phone call--usually during the wee hours of the night. This, though, will soon be
rectified.

Secondly, we once again have a vandal destroying a window in the library. Why? I don't have an answer.

However, on the eve of the New Year, I am going to forget all the strife, all of the angst, all of the discord. The Hiawatha Public Library will begin this year with peace and tranquility. Technology will ease our way and we will become the perfect, smooth-running team about which we dream.

Here's to you, 2011! May the force be with us all!

Absurdly,
Pat
