Sunday, February 14, 2010, Cedar Rapids Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, by Leonard Pitts:
"So no, this is not a clash of ideologies, but a clash between intelligence and its opposite. And I am tired of being asked to pretend stupid is a virtue."
Thank you, Mr. Pitts for so eloquently expressing something that I have been feeling for the last month or so. I am so very tired of dumbing down what I say, what I think and what I write. I may not be a nationally known politician or author, but I am insulted by people who criticize me for using my knowledge and vocabulary in every day conversation.
No, I don't usually spout words like erudite and hellgrammite in everyday scenarios. But if I do speak the speech trippingly from my tongue, please don't assume that I am being snobbish--my parents never used baby talk and I grew up hearing these words on a daily basis.
So, if you don't understand what I mean, please ask, politely. I will be happy to re-phrase. Or, heaven forfend, you can use a dictionary--there are even several on-line to help you.
By the way, my momma raised me to be polite, too. How about yours?
Absurdly,
Pat
