The Absurdities of a Sunday at HPL

The inside book drop is completely full--it is overflowing. And people try to shove more in.

You tell a patron that the library is closed and he ignores you and comes in anyway.

Many patrons say "I thought you were open until (fill in your own time here)." The library has been open from 1 until 4 pm on Sundays for over 10 years.

A patron finally pays over $60 in fines so that her daughter can check out a book for school--5 minutes before closing. Then asks for help in finding an "easy" play for this young adult to read.

Patrons call on a Sunday with a list of 5 books to place on hold--we have a line of 15 people waiting.

Our gate count for Friday was 248. We had 4 staff working all 7 hours. Today we had 163 (plus the phone calls) with 2 staff and 3 hours open. Do the math.

A patron puts a book on hold last summer and wonders why we aren't still holding it for him.

Every third patron says, "Sure is busy in here today."

Sundays sure have become busy around here. Absurdly,
Pat
